Royal Albert Dock Liverpool x Somerset Blooms

Spring/Summer Floral Heart Installation

Commissioned by Royal Albert Dock Liverpool, this large-scale floral installation was created to celebrate the arrival of spring and summer while enhancing one of the dock's most photographed public spaces.

Designed to encourage visitors to pause, interact, and capture memorable moments, the installation became a striking seasonal landmark, bringing colour, vibrancy, and a sense of occasion to the waterfront.

The Brief

The objective was to transform an outdoor space into an engaging floral destination that would enhance the visitor experience, encourage social sharing, and complement the iconic surroundings of the Royal Albert Dock.

The installation needed to withstand months of full sun, changing weather conditions, and constant public interaction while maintaining its visual impact throughout the season.

The result was a bespoke floral heart designed to celebrate the beauty of spring while creating an inviting focal point for visitors of all ages.

Design & Concept

Inspired by the abundance of an English garden in full bloom, the installation was designed to feel joyful, immersive, and instantly recognisable.

A carefully curated palette of seasonal-inspired florals created depth, movement, and texture across the structure, balancing vibrant colour with a refined, garden-led aesthetic. Every flower was positioned by hand to create a natural composition that appeared to grow effortlessly across the heart-shaped framework.

Designed to be experienced from every angle, the installation encouraged visitors to step inside, interact with the structure, and become part of the floral display itself.

Technical Planning & Installation

Creating a permanent outdoor floral installation required far more than floral design alone.

As the installation would remain outdoors throughout the spring and summer months, every material was carefully considered to ensure exceptional longevity and performance.

High-quality UV-resistant silk flowers were selected to withstand prolonged exposure to sunlight without fading, while also enduring wind, rain, and the demands of a busy public environment.

The project required detailed structural planning and engineering considerations before installation began. Every flower was individually secured using specialist techniques, ensuring the design remained safe, durable, and visually consistent despite continuous exposure to the elements.

Balancing creativity with practical engineering was fundamental to the success of the installation, allowing the finished piece to retain its beauty throughout its time on display.

Visitor Experience

Positioned within one of Liverpool's most visited waterfront destinations, the floral heart quickly became a popular feature for visitors exploring the dock.

Families, couples, and tourists were naturally drawn to the installation, stopping to take photographs, share their experiences on social media, and spend longer within the surrounding area. The floral heart encouraged interaction while adding a vibrant seasonal atmosphere that complemented the historic architecture of the dock.

By creating an installation that was both visually striking and highly accessible, the project enhanced the overall visitor experience while providing an engaging destination for both local visitors and those travelling from further afield.

The Impact

The installation demonstrated how floral design can transform public spaces into memorable destinations.

Beyond its visual impact, the floral heart contributed to placemaking by encouraging footfall, increasing visitor engagement, and creating a highly shareable landmark that celebrated the changing seasons. Its success highlighted the value of large-scale floral installations in enhancing public environments while strengthening the connection between place, people, and experience.

The Result

The Royal Albert Dock Floral Heart became a joyful celebration of spring and summer, combining creative floral artistry with thoughtful engineering and technical expertise.

More than a seasonal display, it created an immersive visitor experience that brought colour, beauty, and interaction to one of Liverpool's most iconic destinations, demonstrating how carefully considered floral installations can elevate public spaces and leave a lasting impression.
